Windsor Locks Safety Counselor of the Year
December, 2004 Don Carlson Named Windsor Locks Flight Standards
District Office “Safety Counselor of the Year” The following
narrative acknowledges the outstanding contributions Don Carlson has
made to aviation safety. “His creativity, intense love for aviation
and enthusiasm have had a dramatic impact on the Windsor Locks FSDO
Aviation Safety Program. He seems to constantly appear at FAA safety
events throughout our district, in spite of his schedule as Chief of
Maintenance for Lyon Aviation, a Certified Flight Instructor, holder
of Inspection Authorization, and a Designated Maintenance Examiner.
Don brings a deep love and understanding of aviation to all of his
activities. You instantly see and hear Don’s passion for excellence in
any aviation discussion. He possesses the very highest standards of
workmanship and acts as a tremendous role model for those under his
supervision. He is the consummate aviation professional, who has
gained the respect and admiration of all that know him. Each and
every year, Don is a key player in the FSDO’s Safety Fest /
Maintenance Fest event. This year he was a key contributor to our
“Tips for Buying And Maintaining An Aircraft” and “How Much Does a
$100.00 Annual Really Cost” seminars. Additionally, Don was selected
to represent the airworthiness perspective on our featured event, “
The Future of Aviation Safety” forum. His calm, professional demeanor
served him well in each of these workshops. He is agifted public
speaker because he genuinely cares for his audience. The impact on
aviation safety is tremendous. Twice Don has been recognized as the
Windsor Locks Flight Standards District Office Airworthiness
Technician of the Year. This tremendous honor emphasizes the high
regard in which his peers, subordinates, and the aviation community as
a whole hold him. Often the FAA turns to Don for his expertise and
superior judgment. His credibility within the airworthiness community
is unmatched. In short, Don Carlson epitomizes all that we seek in
our Safety Counselors. His dedication, drive and initiative are second
to none. His creativity has added great depth to the FAA’s safety
programs.” He is always there to carry the ball and reflects great
credit upon the Federal Aviation Administration. I am proud of his
